Bill Boyett offers services designed to assist people to become healthier and have healthier relationships with the people in their lives. He has studied many models for therapy and uses what is appropriate for his clients at a particular time.
Bill helps people use their own internal and external resources to help themselves. He offers suggestions and alternatives while respecting his client's right to make his or her own decisions in life. He respects and is sensitive to religious beliefs of and cultural differences in his clients. He helps individuals learn skills they need to live healthier lives. For those people who are negatively impacted by their past and are unable to use the skills they possess he assists them in resolving and overcoming these past issues. Hypnotherapy, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and formal testing can be utilized at times. Cognitive, behavioral, dynamic, and other therapies may be used to assist clients. Together Bill and his clients negotiate a treatment plan that will attempt to meet his client's specific needs.
Bill abides by the AAMFT Code of Ethics and Washington State law regarding professional conduct in the health professions.
Some individuals requesting individual counseling may wonder if a marriage and family therapist is right for them. There was a state law in Washington that defined the practice of a marriage and family therapist. It is quoted here. “The practice of marriage and family therapy is that aspect of counseling that involves the rendering of professional marriage and family therapy services to individuals, couples, and families, singly or in groups, whether such services are offered directly to the general public or through organizations, either public or private, for a fee, monetary or otherwise. ‘Marriage and family therapy’ means the diagnosis and treatment of mental and emotional disorders, whether cognitive, affective, or behavioral, within the context of marriage and family systems. Marriage and family therapy involves the professional application of family systems theories and techniques in the delivery of services to individuals, couples, and families for the purpose of treating such disorders.” Thus the term “marriage and family therapy” refers not so much to who attends sessions with Bill but refers more to his framework in how he views a person’s situation. He has been trained to see problems occurring not in isolation but within a context, like a family, a job or a culture. Thus he attempts to see a person with what is called a “system perspective.” This is part of his thinking whether there are one or more clients in his office at the same time.
